The AdventurersI’ve always been a huge fan of the Indiana Jones films and archaeology and adventure, and I’m always surprised how few really good games are out there that explore these fantastic themes. The Adventurers games are fast and easy-to-learn, and are exploiting those classic archaeological adventuring clichés in what might turn out to be a whole series of games.

The Adventurers: The Temple of Chac from AEG/Dust Games is fun and fast: if you’re a fan of light, thematic games with a bit of push-your-luck and a lot of randomness, The Temple of Chac is definitely one to have in your collection.

The Temple of Chac features very characterful and detailed miniatures, great art, and some wonderful plastic 3D elements such as the ‘sliding walls’ and a huge stone ball that echoes that fantastic opening scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Pyramid of HorusJudging by the title, more games in this series were always a possibility, and now Fantasy Flight Games (who now publish Dust Games) have announced a second game called The Adventurers: The Pyramid of Horus. This will be a completely stand-alone game with a new selection of characters and new challenges, but still the same basic load-versus-speed, risk-versus-reward game system.

I must admit I’m a bit disappointed that you can’t mix-and-match components from the two games, but I’m sure very little effort would be required to link them together to make a simple ‘campaign’ since the basic systems are the same. In any case, these are games designed to be simple and fun, and they certainly succeed at that!

The new game has an ancient Egyptian theme, and a grab-bag of new deadly challenges for the adventurers to overcome to get the treasure! Wandering mummies are just one of your worries; you must also pass through a nest of cobras, a scorpion-infested sandpit, and a pond that’s home to ravenous crocodiles! Not only that, but stone blocks fall every turn, threatening to trap or slow the unlucky adventurer.

Keep an eye out for The Adventurers: The Pyramid of Horus later this year. It’s sure to be as fast, funny and fun as the original game, but also present players with some classic new challenges!
