Wow.
Just
Wow.

Never enjoyed Co-ops before.
Pandemic was pushing cubes.
Mansions of Madness tasted gamey.
Arkham Horror took 2 days to properly play and even then felt like solitaire.

Flash Point igniting something in me.
Maybe it was the simple gameplay, the evocative narrative or the eternal quest for man to dominate its natural predator: fire but it stirred something.

I’m pretty sure it was the box art.

Take a look at that guy. He wants to win so bad (against fire). Snap impulse buy

And that is what it feels like. A sudden race to get everyone out and do it quickly. I feel that the game needs less people to save and less of those POI counters to make it extremely tense but after 1 play (30 Mins) we were ready to go again.

Highlights was grabbing a person through a broken wall right before the room exploded. Like a boss.
Low Lights is watching room after room explode due to the 4th False alarm.

Whoever told me this game was for beginners was lying through their dirty rail baron teeth. This is as cut-throat of a game as Game of Thrones 2nd edition, and that’s saying alot.

At first we were all making little routes like friendly social workers; only to devolve into rail hungry capitalists as the board filled up.

Ticket to Ride reminds me of Kingdom Builder: primarily because I played Kingdom Builder first. It looks easy when it starts off but then it starts to suck you in with its depth.

It’s no Caylus but it can boost your kids colour hungry ambitions.

might not be heard of but I played a quick game of Anomia with my sisters last night. I now have a reason to throw out fast card games like Uno.

Anomia is like Snap…EXCEPT using your MIND!

Such a fast paced game that feels like you are using all of your brain.

It hurts just thinking about it >_

Is it just me or did they HIT the sweet spot with this game.

A tale of epochs and civilizations crumbling and falling.
30 minute play.
No player elimination?

and up to 7 players!

This is the weapon of choice during those long Saturday nights before games of Catacombs or Runewars. And I can’t believe its longevity.

The simple play and the clean mechanics are so enthralling.
It looks almost too easy.
Then it hits you. You start playing cards then look around…thats alot of green buildings there mate
Now you are trashing linen. Who needs linen anyways? Oh wait those bratty Greeks from Halicarnassus want the linen. ALL THE LINEN.

Too bad: Linen is now the left foot of the Colossus and now you have to change strategies.

One of my faves and a solid reminder to me that there is still innovation just out there.

I don’t like bidding games.
I’m just not good at it.

After one (5) bad game(s) of Powergrid (Strozzi, Modern Art) I never had a big intrest in the mechanic.

Until Ra.

Wow.

Tense, fun, exciting with a little bit of bid.
There is that huge rush when you are the last person.
Will that be a disaster? Or is it that flood I need?
Flood?
Flood!

PRAISE RA!
The game was so much fun. I threw down quick and early and grabbed a substatial pharoah lead I did not relinquish the entire game. It really is about reading the other people and seeing how much will they have.

Other games I played was Troyes, Kingdom Builder x 3 and 90% of Alien frontier which should be getting another printing any time soon.

Conventions are so tiring.
I don’t know how you gamers do it.
18 hours gaming, then going back to the apartment for 8 player Twilight Imperium, that takes alot of moxie.
I did not nearly have enough mana: stayed in the sidelines and watched the space opera unfold.

Things I hate about Cancon: saying I can’t play a game even though I really want too. Had a few offers from friend to play, even a teaching game of Twilight Struggle!! : (

After working for 9 Hours kicked back and waited for the midnight release for a game which must not be named.

And played a game a bunch of games in between. The highlight was a game of Dominion. Gold was flying everywhere and villages were cycling. The game was every bit of fun as it always was except I still hate villages.

Oh and dat chapel.

Chapel hard and chapel fast. I won but I felt i left some newer people behind.

This is just going to be a quick update!

We just set up our stall at CanCon. This is our 4th year there and we have a massive range of stuff. It took us 4 hours to setup. That’s a whole lot of Catan (and a million other games) :S

Lacking the time needed to really play a game I had to rush to my portable stack of solitaire games to play during the downtime.

Enter Rune Age.

It is so hard to break out of the deck building mould. God knows Rune Age tries.
I mean it almost feels like it tried to bite off more than it could chew but somehow it just feels right.
Four different sides.
Four DIFFERENT game modes.
Competitive game play.
Solitaire play.

All in a tight Fantasy Flight Silver Line box.
Solitaire with the game is a race to defeat the customary evil before the game decides to chew you up and spit you out.
I still haven’t played this with more than one.

All my elves are on fire.
All of them

It started with Settlers.
I asked for wood. I received sheep.
Robbed. Counted Dots. Traded. (then) Monopoly’d

Cities. Knights. Seafarers. Spacefarers?

I moved on.

Today I decided to look back.

What I saw was this

I hate people and I hate robbers…

It was still fun to revisit THE classic.

Did I remember why Settlers was so fun?
It was fresh

Maybe not so anymore. After playing different games, play starts to smell pretty stale but revisiting Settlers got me remembering what it was like to find something new.
Something surprising and delightful
Something that screamed “Slow down son, put down those UNO cards, sit down and think a little”

Then Mayfair packaged it with little roads and houses.

Honestly wasn’t expecting much when I looked at
the back of the box.

Bunch of houses? 40 something cards? Hexes but no mini figurines or chits?Almost wrote it off and tossed it into the “play way later if at all” pile.

DXV designed it?
Oh ok then…
BAM
Elegance.

Only played a two player game but I can see it being a really smooth operator.
Can see it being great with 3-4. Bit of weird point counting at the end.

The game plays like Go…
Except victory points
Powers
Random Placement
Different Victory Conditions

In other words, just like Go

But all this made it into an extremely fun package. Interesting decisions with a really clean feel. Sort of like Euro sushi.
And I love sushi…

Gorgeous looking game. Had entire family over to enjoy Chinese New Year, instead of moon cakes we had board games.

Normally family isn’t fond of the odd strategy game and today proved to be the same.

I figured Evo to be as deep as Smallworld ie; not very.

Instead it threw its medium weight around like a cage fighter. Direct confrontation, bidding, turn orders, movement. It was a brawl in a tea cup and while I love this type of game it didnt really please the audience as much.

Still the art was gorgeous and the game was not THAT hard.
Lovely game and I will desperately try to play it with my usual game group.

Survival truly of the fittest!

2/100 Games in 100 Days: King of Tokyo!

Woke up this morning at 7 am to teach some people how to play Here I Stand online at the Wargameroom.com. I missed the teaching game but ended up playing a pick up 6 player game with the regulars. Deals were fast and loose but I was interrupted by friends who came for basketball.
As an aside I feel inclined to play games on the site only when I own them.

Basketball then Thai food (massamun!!) which paved the way for;

KING OF TOKYO!

Brand new, just opened and unsleeved : (
Play was quick and fast. This is not a game for people who shy away from confrontation.
No Cravens ALLOWED

I’ve played this game with more passive people and that can draw it out. With this group it was quick and it was bloody. Claws were haute and flying fast. It was fast and fits that same niche and time frame of 7 wonders with a lot more in your face gamma raying. But man was it a blast. There was seemingly a lot of choices and the game was quick enough that you didn’t mind being eliminated. Or at least I didn’t.
Needless to say my Kraken died 1st three times.
Like a boss

Do you have a guy who is just that lucky?
The same guy that wins all the Catan games streaked three straight wins with King of Tokyo before a Kaiju Coalition brought him down in the final game. What is with his DICE ROLLING?

Sorta wish there was innate differences between the monsters but I love how simple and clean the game is. Any more would just bog it down.
I love it how sometimes you don’t want to be the king of Tokyo but destiny and design shoves you into the stage of history. Usually design and by stage I mean the fists of all your friends.
