I love spaghetti westerns.

Nothing better than a standoff followed with a blaze of gunfire.
Well if Twilight Struggle could attest, sitting in the Kremlin and making dominoes fall is equally as fun.
But not everyone has the time to throw down the slugfest which is Twilight Struggle, then the list of fun (for me at least), 2 player games start to grow thin.

Lost Cities? Card counting.
War of the Ring? same problem as Twilight struggle: with orcs.
Magic? Yeah sure but I could only tap that game for so long.
But checking through the new game pile yesterday I found an eager El Indio grasping two revolvers pointing straight at me.
While the bullets missed the game didn’t. A fast card game about hunting down the Colty gang with a posse of Law Dogs, Revolver really scratched that two player asymmetrical itch that Labyrinth: War on Terror and a CCG game would.

Gameplay was fun and furious. Cowboys and bandits would die left and right and as the Colty gang you really get to feel like the world is against you and you have to race for the Mexican border. As the border looms close, only your closest companions are left as the noose begins to draw around you. Suddenly you are on the 3:15 express from Rattlesnake station with your dog dead and only a few Derringers to keep you comfy.

That’s when you blow up the train.
With all the bounty hunters on it.
Then you make your run for the border.

Ride off. Sunset. Varmints
Doused with the spaghetti western theme making it 3:10 to ‘Yuma’ in-con- carnate this game really hits the theme sweet spot of being playable and thematic (I am looking at you Scarab/ Minotaur Lords… wait that game is pretty good).

Won’t be slamming this down in party situations (unless they are playing Twilight Imperium when you awkwardly rock up mid turn 2), but this is a surefire keep to replace some bad two player card game.

Who am I kidding, I keep all my games.

Not shown: the endless expanse of potential and orcs

Enough with the puns and back to the gaming.

Yesterday I managed to get my greedy little hands on Mage Knight the Boardgame, the second coming.
A lot of people missed out on the first print run and this time it has come back with a vengeance.
There was a lot of fuss being made about the game and a torrent of accolades! All aboard the hype train!

What did I think?

Pretty amazing game. Surprising deck building mechanics inside this game which was used in a way I would never have expected.
You play as heroes but the twist is you can also play as a more villainous character; with the NPCs loving or hating you because of it.

People sort of irked at the complexity of the game but once you go through the game walkthrough, it falls into place fast enough and gives the player pretty robust decisions to make. The best part is how it grabs you and throws you into <del>Azeroth </del>Hyrule and you really feel like a bunch of adventures kicking in Lich doors then realizing you do not have the cards you need to give him a good bashing. Lots of fighting but also enough resource management to separate it from Talisman and Dungeon Run. It is also one of the only boardgames which have tapped into the idea of exploration and whether you can explore faster than your <del>friends </del> enemies, especially when some hacked artefact is waiting for the winner.
What I didn’t like…explaining combat. That was weird for people to take in as it was hard for them to realize it was pretty do or die. And round to round upkeep was pretty tiring which was always rolling dice or filtering cards but not more so than other high upkeep games.

All in all an engaging fantasy race game that intrigues me to play it more and with friends that would like to roleplay mid game like a wizard, just not a super efficient accounting wizard.

Would play again and again and is currently the adventuring game of choice (duelling for top honours with Legend of Drizzt)

What it superceded: Talisman
What it really needs: Flowcharts and time to personally paint those figures

If you are a fan of the books or are loving the new movies there is a new set of games ready to throw you into the world of
The Hunger Games.

We have just received two new ones. The Hunger Games: District 12 Strategy Game and The Hunger Games Jabberjay Card Game.

The Hunger Games: District 12 Strategy Game.

Learn to survive survival by evading the Reaping. Players try to survive in the notorious District 12, gathering food, medicines and supplies while outwitting the other players. At the end one player will be chosen for the Reaping being instantly eliminated from the final tally.

While a few players shy away from direct elimination, in this 30 minute game of cut throat worker placement you find that not only is it in theme but you are thrown face first into an ice cold bowl of tension. The game also has a push your luck mechanic which can give you the edge but also increases the chance of you being chosen.

A great game to introduce to fans and new boardgame players.

The Hunger Games: Jabberjay Card game

For those who love public deduction games like Werewolf and Mafia comes the Hunger Games Jabberjay card game. Players have hidden roles and hidden objectives. The District Citizens have to find the peacekeepers hidden among them. Clever card plays will force people to reveal their identity and be forced to flee the wrath of the other players.

Similar to games like The Resistance, the Jabberjay card game creates this scene of hidden intrigue and trying to read or guess your opponents role is as important and clever strategies.

These are just two games in the Hunger Games world.Pick up these games and immerse yourself in the ruthless world of Suzanne Collins in board/card game form.

and remember…

May the odds be forever in your favour.

It was around 8:00 when our small game group decided we wanted to finish the night with one last hurrah.
We muddled around and flicked through a bunch of games. Our last choice (Evo) took quite a while and left us to choose something a little bit fun and light.

Nope…

Cyclades!

Bidding! Creatures! Doods on the map!

Triremes made a splash and suddenly we were off. Early aggression and control of Ares gives you easy Island control but it was plain to see that Zeus was the key to the game. Priests were flowing and suddenly 12 Drachmas on the feet of Poseidon was no big deal. Mythological creatures were flying out as if they were going out of fashion.
one sat on one.The game started to slip away from me once I was out played on every bid on Zeus and it left me at a meager no metropoli while every

The bank of Apollo saved the day with one final massive bid on Athena which not just built a Metropolis filled with nerds but a Half Chimera Half pegasus Hybrid for the win.

Score one for the Badguys!

Anyone checked out the expansion?
What do you think about it?

I felt that this game just did not get enough credit.
Such a faithful recreation of the Starcraft meta in a boardgame format.
Perfect for 1v1 and slow but playable for anything else.

Ares Project deals with that whole integration between units, strategy and time that all RTS’s try to deal with.
As a boardgame it is a sublime mix of tension and strategy. A hidden race of whether or not you can beat your opponent in a fight.

Then suddenly it sort of disappeared of the map and it is hard to find any one that is willing to play that extreme confrontational 1v1 aspect of the game.

Pity… It does have an amazing place in my collection.

Definitely a favorite in 2011.

Till Tomorrow!

That game was pretty fun. I mean how much strategy did the game contain.
Most of it was tactics which is fine but it certainly scratches a different itch compared too Dominion.

Last night we brought home some wine and friends and tangoed in the starred ring known as Cosmic Encounter.
Known pretty much as a fierce and crazy dudes on an abstracted map game, one of its big appeals its its huge catalogue of playable races with remarkably different powers.

Now I have played Cosmic Encounter before and had a terrible time playing it. Hopefully this game would change my mind.

But once we dealt out the races it was stop go stop go from there.
Only in the final hours once we had a groove how did we find how interesting and utterly crazy the game was.

Way meatier than it should be and I would rather play Rex for my space fix.

Till tomorrow!
